Youth Programs

Figure Skating Lessons with Marika Coolbeth are offered to Kent youngsters, ages 6 and up, in two six-week sessions. Classes, geared to beginning and intermediate skaters, meet Saturdays from 7 to 8 a.m. at the Kent School ice rink. The cost is  $60 per six-week session. Dates for winter 2010-2011 classes will be announced. Contact Park and Rec at 860-927-1003.

Housy Hoops Basketball - open to Region 1 boys in grades 5-8. The program fields teams in the Route 44 travel basketball League Jr. Division for grades 5-6 and Sr. Division for grades 7-8. The program is designed to prepare players for competitive play. For more information, contact Matt Mette, 860-364-1400.

Jazz, Ballet for boys and girls, grades K-2, with Jeri Kansas Wednesdays, 4:30-5:15 p.m., Kent Community House. Cost is $40/four-week session. Pre-registration required by calling 860-927-1003. Registration forms are available online under "Forms." Please note due to the anticipated construction project at the Kent Community House, class times are limited and the location likely will change after September.

Boys Tap/Hip Hop with Jeri Kansas: due to the anticipated construction project at the Kent Community House, this class won't resume until 2011.

Region One Youth Advisory Board - Next meeting to be announced; Sharon Community Center, Hilltop  Road (next to Sharon Center School), Sharon. Youth in grades 7-12 are invited be join this new initiative. Students will work with the region's rec directors and recreation departments to plan activities and create a community service network. Tennis Lessons - Spring Session with First Serve Tennis Academy: Saturday, April 24 through June 5 (rain dates are June 12 and 19) at Kent Common Park. Kiddie Tennis, ages 3-6, meets 9-10 a.m. at a cost of $90; Level 1 Tennis for ages 7-9 meets 11 a.m.-12:30 p.m. at a cost of $130; Level 2 Tennis for ages 10-13 meets 12:30-2 p.m. at a cost of $130. Youth Lacrosse Programs: Recreational clinic for Region One girls in grades 1-4 Thursdays, April 15 through May 20, from 6 to 7 p.m. at Hotchkiss School on the indoor turf in Schmidt Rink. Learn lacrosse basics and focus on skill development in a fun environment. Participants need mouth guard, lacrosse specific eye goggles and a stick. Recreational program for Region One boys in grades 1-4 Thursday, April 15 through May 20 from 5:45 to 6:45 p.m. at The Salisbury School, 251 Canaan Road, Salisbury. Learn lacrosse basics and focus on skill devlopment in a fun environment.  Participants will need mouth guard, stick, protective cup, helmet, gloves, shoulder pads and elbow pads (some hockey equipment can be used). Girls Lacrosse Club, girls in grades 5-8, Tuesday and Thursday, April 13 through May 20, from 6 to 7 p.m.at the Hotchkiss School on the indoor turf in Schmidt Rink. This program is designed for the more committed player, and there will be a mroe serious tone set. Participants will need mouth guard, lacrosse specific eye goggles and a stick.
