Camp Kent – Park and Rec offers an eight-week summer day camp program open to youngsters who will be entering grades 1-8 in the fall. The program meets Monday through Friday from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. at Emery Park, 42 Segar Mountain Road. The 2010 program will run June 28 through Aug. 20. Camp features sports and games, arts and crafts, swimming, weekly themes, Friday pizza lunch. The 2010 weekly themes are: Session I: Independence Week; Session II: Sports Week; Session III: Conservation Week; Session IV: Beach Week (bring a white T-shirt); Session V: Holiday Week; Session VI: Survivor Week; Session VII: Camp Olympics (bring a white T-shirt); Session VIII: Hollywood Week. Youngsters provide their own lunch and snacks. Registration fee is $85/week for Kent residents; $115 for non-residents with a $5 discount for siblings attending in the same week. Camp registration opens the third Wednesday in May from 6:30 to 7:30 p.m. in the Park and Recreation office, town hall. Registration is accepted on a first come, first serve basis with first preference is given to Kent families, next to non-resident families who work in Kent and then non-residents as space permits. New registration policy, starting in summer 2010: $30 of the registration fee is non-refundable for cancellations that can not be filled by other campers.

Colonial Summer Baseball – Kent Park and Recreation offers summer Colonial Baseball for Kent boys ages 13-16. Kent may partner with a neighboring town to form a team depending on registration. The season runs mid-June through July. Registration fee is $70. 
 
Lunch in the Park – Kent Park and Recreation and the Kent Memorial Library will host weekly story hour during the summer at noon at Emery Park, 42 Segar Mountain Road. Families are invited to join the library and Park and Rec for children’s stories. Bring a chair or blanket and a picnic lunch. A park pass is not required. The 2010 program will run July 1 through Aug. 19.

Learn To Swim Program
Kent Park and Recreation will offer Learn-to-Swim program in two sessions: July 19-30 and Aug. 2-13, 2010 at Emery Park. Registration will be accepted on a first come, first served basis, with the lifeguards at Emery Park or in the Park and Rec office, town hall.

A Registration Form and park pass is required to register.

Level 1 – Introduction to Water Skills – age 5 and up; student must be able to enter the water on own and listen to the instructor. Water adjustment and basic beginning skills.

Level 2 – Fundamental Aquatic Skills – gives student success with fundamental skills.

Level 3 – Stroke Development – builds on the skills in Level 2 by providing additional guided practice.

Level 4 – Stroke Improvement – students will develop confidence in the strokes learned and improve other aquatic skills.

Level 5 – Stroke Refinement – provides further coordination and refinement of strokes.

Level 6 – Swimming and Skill Proficiency – refines the strokes so students swim with ease, efficiency, power and smoothness over greater distances.

*Please note that the prerequisite for each level is successful demonstration of the skills taught in the preceding level.

NOGA Soccer – Kent Park and Recreation will sponsor NOGA Soccer Camp Aug. 2-6, 2010 at the playing fields at Kent Center School. Campers ages 4-6 will meet from 9 to 10:30 a.m.; ages 6 and and up will meet from 9 a.m. to noon. Registration fee (tba)includes a camp ball and T-shirt. Register online at www.nogasoccer.com.

Play-Well TEKnologies LEGO camp - dates for the 2011 camp tba. The program meets at Kent Town Hall, 41 Kent Green Boulevard. Kent youngsters ages 6 to 8 will meet from 9 a.m. to noon; ages 9 to 11 will meet from 1 to 4 p.m. The program uses LEGO products to teach design, enginnering and construction. Slamma-Jamma Basketball Camp – Kent Park and Rec will co-sponsor Coach Art Leary’s Slamma-Jamma Basketball Camp of Kent this summer at South Kent School. Session II is Aug. 9-13, 2010. Boys and girls in grades K-3 will meet from 9 a.m. to noon at a cost of $125; boys and girls ages 7 to 14 will meet from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. at a cost of $165. Campers will receive a free camp ball and shirt. The program will include guest speakers and skill competitions. Summer Dance Camps for Youngsters with Jeri Kansas, former Rockette and professional dancer at the Kent Community House, North Main Street. The 2011 dates will be announced

“Little Stars” for ages 5-7 will meet 9-10:30 a.m. Dance and sing to Disney’s Favorite Broadway Tunes, including The Lion King, The Little Mermaid and Mary Poppins. Registration fee tbd.

“So You Think You Can Dance?” for ages 8-11 will meet from 10:30 a.m. to noon. The class includes dance, voice and acting.  Class presentation June 25 at 11:30 a.m. Registration fee tbd.

Summer Outdoor Youth Basketball Program - Tuesday at 7 p.m. for 2010-11 4th and 5th graders; Wednesday at 7 p.m. for 2010-11 6th through 8th graders. Program will meet at the Don Gowan Basketball court outdoors at Kent Center School. Free registration required. Skill development and pick-up games. Call 860-927-1003 for information, registration.

Summer Little League – open to Kent youngsters age 8 to 11 (as of Aug. 1). The program, which will be a joint team with Cornwall and Sharon, will run July through mid-August with weeknight games with regional towns. Registration fee is $45 and includes a team hat and T-shirt.

Teen Trips – Teens who live in Region One and will be entering grades 7 through 12 in the fall are invited to participate in summer trips. Misquamicut Beach State Park in Rhode Island: Aug. 21. The cost is $15/person for transportation, park entry fee. The bus will leave Sharon Center School at 6:15 a.m. and Cornwall Bridge (Scasco) at 6:30 a.m. The bus will depart Rhode Island at 6 p.m. for the return trip. Tennis Lessons – Kent Park and Recreation will offer summer tennis camp with the U.S. Sports Institute; 2011 dates to be announced. Ages 6-10 will meet from 9 to 10:30 a.m. and ages 11-14 will meet from 10:30 a.m. to noon at the tennis courts at Kent Common Park, Swift Lane. Cost is $104/child. U.S. Sports Institute’s Beginner Lacrosse Clinic – Kent Park and Recreation will host the U.S. Sports Institute Beginner Lacrosse Clinic; 2011 dates to be announced. The clinic, open to ages 6 to 14, will offer an introduction to lacrosse for beginning players. Players can experience stick handling, passing, scooping, dodging and shooting. Players will be grouped by age, playing ability and experience level. The cost is $104. Call 860-927-1003 for registration brochure, information.

U.S. Sports Institute’s Multi-Sport Camp – Sharon Rec/Youth will host the U.S. Sports Institute Multi-Sport Camp Aug. 9-13, 2010 from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. at Veterans Field, Sharon. The program, open to ages 5-14, is an opportunity to experience 10 different sports from around the world in one week. Registration fee is $149. U.S. Sports Institute’s Sports Squirt Camp – Kent Park and Recreation will host the U.S. Sports Institute Sports Squirts Camp Aug. 9-13, 2010 for ages 3 to 5 at the playing fields adjacent Kent Center School. The camp will meet 9-10:30 a.m. at a cost of $84/camper. The camp introduces children to a variety of sports through fun activities, designed to promote hand-eye coordination, movement and balance and, most importantly, fun, fun, fun.
